"This gift to the Lubbock area comes from my heart. By making this significant gift you are making great things possible for the South Plains–a place and people I care for deeply. I would like to have this gift help foster children and address health and wellness concerns. Because we are building an endowment, this can happen from now on."
–Spike Dykes

The Lubbock Area Foundation is honoring Spike Dykes by establishing The Sharon and Spike Dykes Family endowment. This is an advised donor fund which will contribute to 501c3 organizations as recommended by Mr. Dykes.

William Taylor "Spike" Dykes was born March 14, 1938. He attended Stephen F. Austin State University where he played center for the Lumberjacks. After graduating in 1959 he coached for multiple high schools as head and assistant coach. 1972 marked the year he started to coach at the collegiate level as assistant coach at the University of Texas. Spike returned to the high school level to coach at Midland Lee from 1980 to 1983. After some time, Spike was hired to be the head coach at Texas Tech in 1986. He would become the first coach in school history to lead the team to seven straight bowl-eligible seasons and to coach the Red Raiders in seven bowl games. He also was head coach of the first Big 12 Conference football game along with Bill Snyder. Spike earned three Southwest Conference and one Big 12 Conference Coach of the Year honors. His record at Tech stands at 82–67–1.
